Yangzi Liu Earns SAHOF Scholarship
Published Wed 14 Sep 2022
Rising star Yangzi Liu has earned a scholarship through the Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) Scholarship and Mentoring Program. Through the scholarship, Yangzi will receive $5,000 plus support from SAHOF over the next 15 months.
The scholarship comes on the back of Yangzi's extraordinary rise and a string of titles and medals in recent months. Last week she won gold in Women's Singles, Women's Doubles and Women's Teams at the 2022 ITTF-Oceania Championships. Last month she won two bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, including becoming the first Australian to win a Women's Singles medal. Domestically, Yangzi won gold in Women's Singles, Women's Teams, Under 21 Women's Singles and Under 21 Mixed Doubles at the 2022 National Championships and gold in the Women's Singles at the 2022 TTA Tour - Sydney. Yangzi was also named as the winner of the Victor Barna Memorial Trophy as the Australian Senior Player of the Year. Yangzi's results saw her catapult to number 31 on the World Rankings.
Upon receiving the scholarship, Yangzi commented, "It's a great honour to be chosen for this scholarship. I know there were a lot of applicants who are all exceptional in the field they represent and to be chosen for table tennis is a credit to me and the sport itself. I am so grateful for the opportunities this will give me for my training and competitions."
TTA CEO Scott Houston was complementary of Yangzi, "TTA is thrilled that Yangzi has been selected in the 2023 Scholarship and Mentoring Program and we are appreciative of the support provided by SAHOF. Yangzi is one of the brightest prospects in Australian table tennis and at just 20 years of age she has a big future ahead. This is evidenced by Yangzi anchoring the Women’s Team to a bronze medal and then becoming the first Australian female to win a Women’s Singles medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games."
Congratulations and well done Yangzi, you're flying the Aussie flag with distinction.
