William Henzell Appointed 2020 Olympic Games Team Manager and Assistant Coach
Published Thu 27 Feb 2020
William Henzell, arguably Australia’s greatest ever player, has been appointed as Team Manager and Assistant Coach for the 2020 Olympic Games Team. Henzell is the equal record holder for the most appearances by an Australian male at the Olympic Games in table tennis - a three-time Olympian, he represented Australia in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
Henzell is a 13-time National Men’s Singles Champion, a TTA Hall of Fame Member and a TTA Life Member. Since retiring from competing, Henzell has established his career working at senior management level in the corporate sector and completed a Master of Business Administration through Melbourne Business School.
Through the appointment, Henzell will become involved with ongoing National Squad Training and will be a key figure on the ground in Tokyo.
TTA National Head Coach (Able-Bodied), John Murphy, was thrilled with the appointment. Murphy commented, ‘having William join our 2020 Olympic Games team is a massive boost. His Olympic experience will be invaluable and he brings world class table tennis knowledge to the role. William is still held in the highest regard by all our athletes and coaches and he will no doubt make a positive contribution to our campaign in Tokyo’.
Australia earned maximum quota places for the 2020 Olympic Games by winning the ITTF-Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament for Teams in Mornington on 6 December 2019. This ensures Australia can compete in Men’s Teams, Women’s Teams, Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles. Australia is also aiming to claim the sole Oceania Mixed Doubles quota place at the upcoming ITTF-Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament for Mixed Doubles, to be played in Brisbane on 19-20 April.
Welcome to the team William, it’s great to have you back!
