Table Tennis Australia (TTA) would like to extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Australian Paralympic table tennis player Bruno Moretti, who sadly passed away.

Born in Ivanhoe, Victoria, Moretti was a member of Australia’s first Paralympic Team in Rome 1960, where he won a silver medal in the men’s class B table tennis competition alongside Bill Mather-Brown.

At the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in 1962 he won two gold medals in the men’s singles and doubles class B. Moretti was also a member of Australia’s  1966 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games Team in Kingston, Jamaica.

He would go on to represent Australia in table tennis again at the Tel Aviv 1968 Paralympic Games The multi-talented athlete also participated in athletics, winning three medals - one gold and two silvers - as well as being a member of the men’s wheelchair basketball team.

Moretti would later coach Australia's men’s wheelchair basketball team at the New York/Stoke Mandeville 1984 Paralympic Games.

Moretti is described as one of the “trailblazers” of the Australian Paralympic Movement, who played an important role in the beginnings to help develop it into what it is today.

“TTA are sad to learn of Bruno’s passing, but we are grateful for the role he played in para table tennis and we are proud of the legacy he leaves behind,” TTA CEO Scott Houston said.

“Bruno is no.2 on the Official Australian Representatives – Para Men list.

“The record medal hauls our athletes achieved at the Tokyo Paralympics are directly linked back to the foundation laid by those trailblazer athletes such as Bruno,” he added.
