Teenager Dhooria the Talk of the Tweed at National Top Ten

Teenager Rohan Dhooria has stamped himself as a star of the future after pulling off several major upsets on the opening day of the main draw at the National Top Ten competition at Tweed Heads.

And multi-Olympians Jian Fang Lay and Miao Miao stamped their class in the women’s draw.

Dhooria, who had to win his way through qualifying to make the Top Ten, could not have been more impressive on Saturday afternoon, dropping just one set and claiming the major scalp of Olympian David Powell in his four matches.

In the women’s, four-time Olympian Miao was particularly impressive, not dropping a set in her four matches, including a three-nil win over Rio Olympian, Melissa Tapper.

Miao finished top of group one, with Tapper in second position.

Fang Lay, who represented Australia at a record-equalling fifth Olympic Games last year, dropped just two sets to finish top of Group One, with NSW’s Michelle Beaumont in second.

The results mean Rio 2016 teammates, Fang Lay and Tapper, will face off on Sunday, while Miao will take on Beaumont.

Rio 2016 debutant David Powell had a difficult afternoon in the men’s draw, losing to Dhooria, Wade Townsend and New South Wales’ Erne Tsao, finishing third in the group.

A class field in group one ended with Olympic teammates Chris Yan and Heming Hu finishing first and second, and 2014 Commonwealth Games debutant, Kane Townsend, third.

The undefeated Yan will match up against Wade Townsend on Sunday, while Canberra’s Dhooria will look to keep his incredible run going when he takes on Hu
