Table tennis results in Tokyo shine media spotlight on financial support issue
Published Sat 31 Jul 2021
As our Olympians showcased the quality of Australian table tennis matching up with the best in the world at the Tokyo Olympics, the issue of a lack of funding for the sport in the next Olympic cycle has been receiving some attention in the Australian media.
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have cut all funding for TTA's able-bodied high performance program, deeming that table tennis is unlikely to win Olympic Games medals or a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
TTA CEO Scott Houston said the lack of funding will jeopardise the development of the current crop of junior players and hinder their potential to push for medals in the next Olympic Games, particularly looking ahead towards the 2032 Brisbane Games.
“I am proud of our performances in Tokyo,” Houston said. “However, I can’t help but wonder what might have been possible if we were recipients of AIS high performance funding; without doubt our team would have been better prepared and in all likelihood our results would have been stronger,” he said.
