Table Tennis makes big strides with Sporting Schools

In a year that has turned grassroots sport on top of its head, table tennis has prevailed, with a record breaking year in Sport Australia’s Sporting Schools Program.

Reaching a total of 23,500 school students (45% increase from last year) from all state and territories, Table Tennis Australia worked with over 240 schools throughout 2020.

Table Tennis was also the 7th most popular sport within the program in Term 2 and we are excited to see the final tally later in the year.

TTA National Participation Coordinator, Egon Loh said despite the challenges faced by all sports in this sector, he is excited to see table tennis reaching more school students than ever before.

“Table Tennis is a sport for all, no matter your age, gender or ability, so it’s really fantastic to see so many school students get on board with our great sport,” she said.

“While we expected far less bookings due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was really great to see that school teachers saw the importance of sport and recognised the physical and social benefits that a sport like table tennis has to offer.

“We’d like to thank all of the schools, coaches and teachers who have participated in our program and we look forward to not only booking more schools in 2021, but seeing some of our budding new players enter the table tennis halls in 2021.”

The Sporting Schools program is a Sport Australia initiative designed to help schools increase children’s participation in sport, and to connect them with community sporting opportunities.

Sporting Schools programs are provided free to children and their families to help build the confidence and capability to be active for life.
