Our Australian Table Tennis Team is heading home

The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is one for the Table Tennis Australia history books.

Twelve out of fourteen athletes and three out of four coaches in Birmingham were Commonwealth Games debutants. This was the largest Australian table tennis team in Commonwealth Games history.

The tournament was filled many career best victories and National Head Coach (Able-Bodied) John Murphy is proud of the team and their achievements.

“Capping off our Commonwealth Games campaign with another medal today was a great way to finish,” Murphy said.

“I am so proud of the team and everything we have achieved here in Birmingham. Of course we were quietly confident coming into the event.

“However, our results exceeded expectations, especially considering the vast majority were Commonwealth Games debutants.”

Table Tennis Australia CEO Scott Houston has been in Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games and couldn’t be prouder of the way the team performed and the team spirit that was evident throughout.

“We finished with 1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze and two 4th places, making this our most successful Commonwealth Games campaign ever,” Houston said.

“These results don’t just happen overnight. They happen as a result of four years of player development, hard work, careful planning and team building.

“Every athlete and coach on this team has their unique story, has travelled their own long journey and has made so many sacrifices. I’m pleased that everyone has been rewarded for their efforts,” he said.

This is a national team that the Australian table tennis community can be proud of and the future for Australian table tennis looks bright.

“The support our team has received from the Australian table tennis community has been tremendous.

“We hope that the team has made everyone proud and they have demonstrated that we have made big strides forward and are heading in the right direction.”
