Northcote Primary School enjoying Spinneroos through Sporting Schools
Published Mon 07 Mar 2022
Northcote Primary School has been seeing the benefits of hosting a Spinneroos program through Sport Australia’s Sporting Schools initiative.
The school-based north of Melbourne’s CBD came across the Spinneroos program after looking for a new and inclusive sport to get the students involved in.
“We were looking for a new sport to play inside that would be inclusive of everyone and thought the Spinneroos program provided that,” said Northcote Primary teacher Dale McLean.
“It has allowed the students to engage in a fun and safe environment while teaching them the basic skills of table tennis.”
It’s been a massive hit amongst the students, who eagerly await the time their next Spinneroos session comes around.
“They’ve been gaining confidence with each and every session. They are very eager to jump into each lesson and have even been talking about setting up a Table Tennis lunch club on a Friday,” McLean said.
“Seeing all the different groups of students find success has been one of the most rewarding aspects of Spinneroos.”
To help in delivering the program, Table Tennis Australia has developed online resources that allow teachers to deliver the Spinneroos program at the school.
The Spinneroos Online Coaching Platform provides a comprehensive 4-8 week lesson plan with videos and detailed activity cards. The resources have been of great benefit to the teachers involved in delivering the program at Northcote as they developed own their skills through the Spinneroos e-coaching resources.
“The videos are a great way to get an understanding of an activity and how to teach the students,” McLean said. “I’m glad we had access to something like this as it has made it easier to help support the students.”
The Sporting Schools program is provided free to primary school-aged children and their families to help students build the confidence and capability to be active for life.
If you would like to see table tennis at your child’s school, encourage them to apply for a Term 2 Sporting School Grant. Find more information about the grant applications here.
