Final Results - Stage 2 Australian Qualification Tournament for the 2020 Olympic Games
Published Sun 19 Jan 2020
After three epic days of competition at Stage 2 of the Australian Qualification Tournament for the 2020 Olympic Games, Michelle Bromley, Stephanie Sang, Chris Yan and David Powell have earned the right to be nominated into the Australian Olympic Team.
Day three was an absolute cliff hanger, with every point and every match pivotal to the final outcome. In the Women's Singles, Michelle Bromley won the event finishing with an 8-1 record. Bromley saved her best for last, defeating the top two seeds today in Jian Fang Lay and Melissa Tapper. Bromley epitomises guts and determination and is a great example of never giving up. After multiple previous qualification attempts, being nominated into the Australian Olympic Team for the first time is an outstanding reward for her efforts.
Stephanie Sang claimed second spot after finishing with a 7-2 record. Jian Fang Lay and Melissa Tapper also finished with the same result, but Sang came through on count back. Sang was out of the sport for multiple years while raising two children, but after returning last year she has steadily improved back to her former level. Sang previously competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
In the Men's Singles, Chris Yan and David Powell both finished with a 7-2 record and Yan emerged as the event winner on count back. On day one of the competition, Yan lost his first two matches, but he recovered superbly to win his next seven matches. Powell perhaps flew under the radar a little, but he got the job done in front of his home crowd with a clinical display. Yan and Powell also competed at the 2016 Olympic Games.
