Day 4 Wrap – Doubles Finalists Decided
Published Thu 28 Sep 2017
The evening session of day 4 of the 2017 Australian Senior Championships in Adelaide saw the finalists in all doubles events decided. In the Men’s Doubles top seeds David Powell and Kane Townsend clung on for a 11-9 in the fifth game win over Trent Carter and Erny Tsao in the semi final, while second seeds Heming Hu and Wade Townsend came back from 0-2 down in their semi final against young guns Dominic Huang and Jake Duffy before eventually winning 3-2. In the Women’s Doubles the top seeds had a much easier ride through to the final where Miao Miao and Jiamuwa Wu will face Melissa Tapper and Michelle Beaumont at the final hurdle. Both pairs are through to the final with the loss of only one game between them.
In the Under 21 Men’s Doubles Dominic Huang and Jake Duffy will fight for gold against Luke Cosgriff and Erny Tsao, while in the Under 21 Women’s Doubles Sarah Tan and Antonia Zhang will face off with Parleen Kaur and Mia Zhou. All doubles finals will be played on Saturday.
Two rounds of the Men’s Team event were played today with results going according to seeding for the most part. Several exceptional performances took place, in particular Jake Lee from NSW who toppled the Victorian Olympian Heming Hu in four games. Also Luke Cosgriff from Victoria B pushed reigning Australian Champion Kane Townsend from NSW all the way before Townsend eventually held out to win by the narrowest of margins. In the highest ranking clash of the day, Kane Townsend kept his run going as he overpowered Olympian Chris Yan from Presidents in four games. All the Pool matches are now complete, in Pool A Victoria, NSW B and Queensland B are the top three team and in Pool B NSW, Queensland and Victoria B lead the charge. Cross over matches begin tomorrow.
The Women’s Team event is up to the final round that will be held tomorrow. The hotly contested match between Victoria and NSW will determine who takes home gold. On paper Victoria looks hard to beat, however gold medal matches bring serious pressure and that can throw the game wide open. It should be a cracking match.
The Under 21 Men’s and Under 21 Women’s Team events are also coming to the business end of the tournament. With two rounds and one round remaining respectively, the multiple teams still have a chance to claim gold. In the Under 21 Men’s NSW, NSW B and NSW C still hold the top three spots. If they remain this way after tomorrow surely it would be the first time the same state has claimed all medals in the same team event. Menawhile in the Under 21 Women’s Teams Victoria B has one hand on the trophy. Undefeated thus far, if they can take down Victoria tomorrow gold is theirs. Western Australia is the only other team that can possibly win gold, but for that to happen they must beat NSW and they need Victoria to beat Victoria B and have overall match scores go their way.
