Day 2 Wrap – Hu/Tapper and Huang/Wu Strike First Gold

Day 2 of the 2017 National Senior Championships in Adelaide saw the first gold medals decided. In the Mixed Doubles event top seeds Heming Hu and Melissa Tapper claimed gold for the first time. After overcoming a scare in the quarter final where they came back from 0-2 to win in five games against Shaoping Zhang and Kai Peng they never looked back, recording straight games victories in both the semi final and final.
In the Under 21 Mixed Doubles again the top seeded pair claimed gold, namely Dominic Huang and Jiamuwa Wu. At the final hurdle they toppled Jake Duffy and Qi Wu in straight games in a dominant performance.
Meanwhile in the teams event a further two rounds were completed today. In the Men’s Teams Victoria is yet to drop any rubbers in Pool A, whereas there is congestion in Pool B where NSW, Presidents and Victoria B still undefeated. Noteworthy performances included Mateo Dvorani remaining in the fast lane, however this time he was pipped at the post by Olympian Chris Yan. Also Ben Houghton from Queensland C upstaged his Queensland team mates, recording victories against both Altantuga Lkhagvadori and Jake Duffy. Victoria C’s Michael Mastromonaco must have walked under a ladder before his match against against Victoria B as he lost advantage in the fifth game to both Eric Huang and Dominic Huang.
In the Women’s Teams Victoria look hard to beat as they are yet to drop any rubbers in the first two rounds and Queensland are in the same position. Stand out performances today came from Miao Miao who didn’t concede more than seven points in any games as she whitewashed Sarah Tan and Mabel Ma from NSW C. Additionally Qi Wu was in the fast lane when Queensland defeated Victoria B as she only dropped a single game on her way to defeating Michelle Wu and Maggie Meng.
In the Under 21 Men’s Teams all of NSW, NSW B, NSW C and Queensland yet to taste defeat. Matthew Pettett got his money’s worth when Queensland played Victoria, his last match went to a nail biting 17-15 in the deciding game as he overcame Zach Anstey. Isaiah Lee led his South Australia B team to victory over Victoria in round 3, defeating both Matt Avers and Nathan Pellissier along the way.
In the Under 21 Women’s Teams NSW, Western Australia and Victoria B are leading from the front by remaining undefeated thus far. Top performers from today’s matches were Victoria's Ellen Walker who outlasted Western Australia's Mia Kelly in five games and Katherine Li from NSW who notched up four consecutive wins with the loss of just a solitary game.
