Day 1 Wrap - 2017 National Senior Championships Kick Off In Adelaide

The 2017 National Senior Championships are underway at the Campbelltown Recreation Centre in Adelaide's north eastern suburbs. Multiple events will be held throughout the week including Teams, Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles for both women and men in the open age group and under 21 age group.
The teams events are first cab off the rank and 2017 will see a new format being played. Teams now comprise of two players and the format involves four singles matches and one doubles match.
In Round 1 of the Women’s Teams, number 1 seeds Victoria steamrolled NSW B 5-0, only losing a single game in the five matches. NSW defeated Victoria B 4-1 with a noteworthy performance coming from Maggie Meng who defeated the higher ranked Michelle Bromley in what was the only taste of success for the Victorians. Finally Queensland overpowered NSW C 5-0 where they did not drop a single game in a powerful display.
Round 1 of the Men’s Teams saw Presidents claim a 5-0 win over Victoria C and NSW C took down South Australia C also 5-0. ACT fought hard against NSW B but could only chalk up a single victory when Rohan Dhooria overcame Shaoping Zhang and they eventually fell to a 4-1 defeat. Hosts South Australia found their opening round against top seeds Victoria too much to handle, although they took some games along the way they still went down 5-0. In the closest match of the round, the highly fancied NSW team was made to work hard for a 3-2 victory over Queensland C where Mateo Dvorani was the star and claimed urguably career best wins against both Kane Townsend and Trent Carter.
Meanwhile in the Under 21 Women’s Teams, top seeds NSW defeated Victoria 4-1, an undefeated Mia Zhou powered Western Australia to a 3-2 win over South Australia and Victoria B accounted for South Australia B 5-0.
Finally in the Under 21 Men’s Teams, NSW defeated South Australia 5-0, Queensland notched up a 4-1 win over South Australia B, NSW B overcame Western Australia 4-1, Presidents claimed a 4-1 win over Western Australia B and NSW C proved too hot to handle for Victoria with a 4-1 win.
