Bouncing back into Spinneroos with Mornington Frankston

Published Tue 25 Jan 2022

Mornington Peninsula and Frankston City Table Tennis Association are looking forward to welcoming back Spinneroos in its first program of 2022.

Mornington Frankston TTA held their first Spinneroos program in Term 1, 2021 - running a Girls Only Spinneroos and Mixed Spinneroos program - feeling it was the perfect way to introduce children to table tennis with the hope it would flow onto creating a future pathway for them in the sport.

The club’s Spinneroos coordinator Sally Culley said their initial launch of the program at the club saw great support.

“It’s such a well organised and structured program with all the necessary equipment and lesson plans provided,” she said.

“The feedback from both participants and parents/guardians has been very positive.

“The kids loved getting their kit with their own bat and named shirt etc…they all had a lot of fun participating in the program. The parents enjoyed watching their kids in a safe, welcoming environment and some of them have picked up a bat and have been having a hit themselves!” Culley added.

Spinneroos is an entry-level program from Table Tennis Australia (TTA) that introduces the sport to children aged 5-12 through fun and engaging activities in a safe environment.

While lockdowns halted the club’s ability to host Spinneroos in the later part of 2021 with their Term 3 program also interrupted, excitement is growing at Mornington Frankston TTA as they prepare for its return.

Their upcoming term, set to begin in early February, will see the club host a female program (Thursday) and a mixed group (Friday), just as they did in Term 1 last year.

“We feel it’s important to offer both programs to accommodate both boys and girls. The Girls Only program is a great opportunity for girls to gain confidence and skills in their own group,” Culley explained.

Mornington Frankston TTA has already seen positive outcomes including several children who’ve participated in Spinneroos joining their junior program to further develop their skills.

Most importantly, what the club has enjoyed most about running Spinneroos is seeing the joy on children's faces throughout each session, especially when they learn a new skill for the first time.

“The progress they make from the start of the program to where they are at the end of the program is always amazing both to us and the kids themselves,” Culley said.

Mornington Frankston TTA’s Spinneroos Girls Only program kicks off on Thursday 10 February before the mixed Spinneroos program begins the following day.
