Best Ever Results at World Youth Championships

Published Sat 10 Dec 2022

1 silver medal, 1 bronze medal and 2 quarter finals means that the 2022 World Youth Championships are Australia’s best ever in the 20-year history of the event.

The World Youth Championships were played in Tunisia from 4-11 December. This was a breakout performance for our best young stars, highlighted by our Under 15 Boys’ Team (Aditya Sareen, Won Bae and Chulong Nie) winning silver and our Under 15 Boys’ Doubles pair (Won Bae and Chulong Nie) winning bronze.

Just a few years ago such results would have been improbable, however our current generation of players are rising quickly in world table tennis and we can now match it with the world’s best - as evidenced by winning medals at the World Youth Championships for the first time.

In recent years we have seen a stack of medals won at international events, our player’s world rankings significantly improve including Nicholas Lum reaching world number 1 in Under 17 Boys’ earlier in the year, and complete domination within Oceania. However, our results at the 2022 World Youth Championships take the program to a whole new level.

National Head Coach (Able-Bodied), John Murphy, commented “I couldn’t be prouder of the team and the way they’ve performed here in Tunisia. To take away two medals from the event shows that we’ve taken another big step forward.

“The team have been overseas for a long time and they’ve worked incredibly hard. Results provide justification for all the hours put in, however it’s the process of continued learning and development to get here that I’m most impressed with.

“The players have earned a break over the Christmas period, but 2023 will be another big year for our players and program and no doubt we’ll be looking to continue our momentum”, Murphy concluded.
