Australia Smashes ITTF-Oceania Records
Published Tue 13 Sep 2022
The 2022 ITTF-Oceania Championships were played from 5-10 September at Eastland Shopping Centre in Melbourne. Our Australian team completely dominated the event from start to finish. Check out some of the incredible statistics and highlights from the event:
- Australia won 28 out of 28 gold medals on offer.
- Australia also won 18 silver and 21 bronze medals, for a total of 67 medals.
- From the 20 individual events played, 18 events were an all-Australian final.
- All 23 team members won between 1-6 gold medals each and between 2-7 medals overall.
- Through our results, Australia has qualified for the World Championships and World Junior Championships.
- Nicholas Lum became the youngest ever Oceania Men’s Singles Champion at 17 years of age. Nicholas made a clean sweep of the open events, claiming gold in Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Men’s Teams.
- Connie Psihogios won a triple crown of under-age singles events, claiming gold in Under 21 Women’s Singles, Under 19 Girls’ Singles and Under 15 Girls’ Singles – and she’s still only 13 years old.
- Most players recorded career best victories and results.
Australia’s results are the most successful by any country in the history of the ITTF-Oceania Championships.
Over and above the outstanding results, the team spirit, camaraderie, sportsmanship and unity amongst all players and coaches was absolutely first class. This is equally important as our on-table results.
Full credit goes to our wonderful able-bodied program staff – John Murphy, Jens Lang, Simon Gerada and Hongbo Liang – for leading the team with distinction. And of course thank you to all players for your hard work to prepare for the event and then to deliver during the event.
