Aussies Hunting Medals in Slovenia
Published Fri 12 Nov 2021
Australia's Yangzi Liu advanced to the Women's Singles Round of 16 at the World Table Tennis Contender event in Slovenia, after defeating India's Sreeja Akula 3-1 overnight.
The 19-year-old had to back-up after an earlier hard fought match alongside Aussie number 1 Min Hyung Jee in the Women's Doubles, where the duo defeated Hungarians Bernadett Balint and Mercedes Nagvaradi 3-0.
"I feel really good now because I played two matches today," Liu said.
"In the morning, Min and I played really well against Hungary, we won 3-0 in our Round of 16 in Doubles, and in the evening ... it was a tough match against the player from India, but I am happy I won 3-1."
Liu will have a battle on her hands in the Women's Singles Round of 16 at 5.45pm local time (3.45am AEDT Saturday 13 November).
"Tomorrow I will play Xiaona Shan from Germany, she's won multiple Olympic medals and has a really high world ranking [#37] so I am ready to just play my best in the match," Liu said.
However, before she plays Shan, Liu and Jee will play the Russian team of Yana Noskova and Olga Vorobeva in the quarterfinal at 10.40am local time (12.40am AEDT Saturday 13 November), with a win securing a medal.
“Yangzi and I have played really well so far in this tournament and we look forward to playing tomorrow for a medal," Jee said following their Round of 16 victory.
"It will be a tough match but we will prepare well and hopefully we can win."
In the Mixed Doubles, Jee and Nicholas Lum were defeated 1-3 by Belarus pair Aleksandar Khanin and Katsiaryna Baravok.
Khanin and his English teammate Samuel Walker also proved a tough pair for Australia's Dillon Chalmers and Xavier Dixon who were defeated 1-3 in the Men's Doubles Round of 16 earlier in the day.
