A Celebration of Skill and Sportsmanship
Published Thu 12 Sep 2024
The stage is set for one of the most anticipated Australian table tennis events of the year - the National Veterans Championships. Taking place from Saturday 14th to Saturday 21st September at the Silverdome in Tasmania, this tournament will bring together some of the most experienced and passionate veteran players from across the country.
The National Veterans Championships have been running since 1984, and this year sees the 38th Championship event being held back in Tasmania where it all began 40 years ago.
Proudly supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania, the National Veterans Championships are unique in that they highlight the talents of players aged 30 and above, offering a platform for seasoned athletes to demonstrate their enduring passion for the sport.
This year’s event arranged by the ever-amazing organising committee of Bev and Brian James, Phil Davis, Claire Montgomery from Table Tennis Australia; and President of Table Tennis Tasmania, Roger Massie and his team of volunteers, will see over 400 participants ranging in age from 30 years to 88 years old, show case their skills, and promises everything from excitement to intense competition, and a celebration of sportsmanship.
The competition is expected to be fierce as players battle it out in singles, doubles and team formats, and supporters can look forward to seeing skilled rallies and strategic gameplay, that comes with years of experience. "The National Veterans Championships is not just about winning titles—it’s about celebrating the love of the game, bringing together old friends, and fostering a sense of community within the sport. We are so proud of this event and its longevity," said Claire Montgomery, TTA Events Lead.
The National Championships are a testament to the idea that age is no barrier when it comes to table tennis. Many of the participants have been playing table tennis for decades, and this event serves as a way for them to continue pursuing their passion, while inspiring younger generations to do the same. It's a reminder that sports, like table tennis, can be enjoyed for life and played by all.
