2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games set to return down under
Published Wed 21 Jul 2021
Tonight Australians are celebrating after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Queensland has secured the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
As the country’s best athletes are preparing in Japan for the delayed 2020 Tokyo Games, young children across the country are filled with excitement at the possibility of competing at a home Olympics and Paralympics in front of friends and family.
For the third time in Australia’s history, the Olympics will be coming down under. The Games will not only showcase the very best of Brisbane, but will also see the Olympics held across the Sunshine State including Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and North Queensland.
Another home Games will provide an opportunity to unearth the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians, and see more sporting infrastructure put in place to support sporting programs from the grassroots through to elite, as well as shine a spotlight on Australia and its world class athletes.
Table Tennis Australia CEO Scott Houston said he is delighted with the outcome, and looks forward with excitement and anticipation to the 11 year build up.
“Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games presents an incredible opportunity for all sports in Australia,” Houston said.
“Not only will the world’s eyes be on our country in 2032, but the hopefully increased investment and support for high performance and grassroots sport over the next 11 years can only provide positive outcomes for Australian sport.
“We look forward to being a part of history, and supporting the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions,” he said.
Rising table tennis star Nicholas Lum is excited at the prospect of competing at a home Olympics.
“I can't believe the Olympics are coming to Australia in 2032! Competing at the Olympic Games in front of a home crowd would be a dream come true,” Lum said.
“This announcement will give me and I am sure many others even more motivation to keep training and work hard to get there.”
