2018 National Junior & Cadet Top 10 Tournament Final Results
Published Wed 17 Jan 2018
The Brisbane Table Tennis Association hosted what turned out to be a thrilling conclusion to the 2018 National Junior & Cadet Top 10 Tournament after two days of keenly contested table tennis.
All four categories headed into their respective last rounds with all places still yet to be decided, resulting in some tense final matches for both Juniors and Cadets alike. Ultimately, each competition had a clear and deserved victor. So close were the fields this year however, that most of the minor medals across the age divisions were settled on countback. Congratulations to all players for the fighting spirit on display and the high quality of skill and sportsmanship shown throughout the entirety of the tournament.
Junior Boy's Singles
Queensland-local Benjamin Gould led the Junior Boy's Singles from start to finish in a strong display including an impressive 11-5, 11-8, 11-5 victory over runner-up Bob Liang in the decisive final round to claim top spot undefeated. Third place went to Hayden Green, who narrowly edged out Mike Liang and Andy Nguyen-Hyunh via countback. Mention must go to Andy who, despite being seeded 7th in the Junior Boy's, claimed some big scalps on day one of fixtures and was sitting second after the penultimate round of fixtures only to be pipped at the post for a medal due to a bye in the last round.
Winner: Benjamin Gould Second: Bob Liang Third: Hayden Green
Junior Girl's Singles
The Junior Girl's Singles entered its sixth and final round with two straight shoot-outs for medal places. Michelle Wu came from behind to prevail against Rebekah Stanley (7 - 11, 11 - 3, 14 - 12, 11 - 6) and secure the gold, finishing the double round robin undefeated. Diana Jin then snared third place after beating Lavenia Bradshaw 3 games to 1 for the second time in the tournament.
Winner: Michelle Wu Second: Rebekah Stanley Third: Diana Jin
Cadet Boy's Singles
Finn Luu continued the trend of undefeated champions by finishing top of the pile courtesy of a win over runner-up Nicholas Lum in straight games in the final round of play. Throughout the entirety of the tournament Finn dropped only the one game, a truly deserved winner. Raymond Zhang then secured bronze for himself after beating Hwan Bae in the final round, finishing level on points with Nicholas. The pair were separated by only their head to head record in the earlier fixtures.
Winner: Finn Luu Second: Nicholas Lum Third: Raymond Zhang
Cadet Girl's Singles
In what was perhaps the most hotly contested event in this iteration of the Junior & Cadet Top 10, Danni-Elle Townsend made it four from four undefeated winners at this year's tournament. After beating Parleen Kaur in the penultimate round (11 - 6, 11 - 9, 7 - 11, 9 - 11, 11 - 8) in what shaped to be a title-decider, Dani-Elle sealed top spot with victory over Sue Bin Oh. Chermaine Quah then leaped from fourth to second with a final round victory over Parleen Kaur, which left the pair along with Sue Bin tied on points. The medal positions having to be separated (yet again) via a countback.
Winner: Danni-Elle Townsend Second: Chermaine Quah Third: Parleen Kaur
