40 Year Reunion of Australia's Greatest World Championships Team
Published Fri 26 Apr 2019
With the World Championships currently underway in Budapest, it's appropriate to recognise the 40 year anniversary of Australia's greatest World Championships performance - the Men's Team finishing 12th at the 1979 World Championships in Pyongyang, North Korea.
The team consisted of Paul Pinkewich, Steve Knapp, Bob Tuckett, Neil Ward, Robbie Javor and Eric Coster (NPC).
In the last match against Denmark, the Aussies trailed 4-2 before digging deep to win the last three rubbers and record a historic 5-4 victory. Pinkewich and Knapp claimed two wins apiece and Tuckett saved his best for last, winning the deciding rubber against Denmark king pin Claus Pederson.
The team recently had a reunion in Melbourne to celebrate the anniversary. No doubt many a story was reminisced upon!
