Table Tennis Australia Considers 2023 World Championships Finals Bid

TTA is pleased to announce that we are considering being part of a formal bid to host the 2023 ITTF World Championships Finals, on the back of multiple cities preliminarily expressing interest in bringing the greatest table tennis event on earth to Australia for the first time ever in the sport’s history.

The prestigious competition, which has been running since 1926, has never before reached the shores of Oceania, but the new, modern format of the World Championships Finals, which will come into play from 2021, is widening the net of potential host cities, with less onerous requirements than in previous years. This provides TTA with the confidence needed to consider bidding to bring all premier table tennis athletes Down Under.

Australia is fortunate in that it has multiple iconic cities and venues capable of hosting the event, not to mention a thriving tourism industry, which could provide an added boost to spectator numbers. We are in close proximity to Asia, both geographically and in time zones, thus benefitting a significant section of the sport’s TV and online followers.

The World Championships Finals offer incredible global reach of over 500 million fans on fast-growing TV and digital platforms, helping to put any host city well and truly on the world’s sporting map and providing opportunities to create a strong legacy for the region’s aspiring stars.

The benefits of hosting the World Championships Finals are clear to see, however due diligence is required before a final determination can be made. TTA will provide further updates in the coming months.
